The Deep C Anand Foundation Scholarship

We are delighted to announce that the Deep C Anand Educational Trust have
agreed to support a scholarship programme for Class XI students at Bishop Cotton
School, Shimla. Mr Anand, the founder of the Anand Group, is one of the most well
known Old Cottonians and is a member of the Board of Governors. Details below how to apply.

The scholarships will be awarded to Class XI students of high moral character who
can demonstrate an excellent academic track record to date (including Class X
board results) and outstanding potential for Class XII and beyond. The awards are
open to current BCS students as well as to exceptional external applicants. Boys
who can also demonstrate a high level of accomplishment in an extra-curricular
discipline (eg Sport, Music or Drama) will be at an advantage. It is anticipated that up
to four boys each year will be awarded scholarships that will remain in place for
Class XI and Class XII.

The Director of BCS, Mr Simon Weale said “This is an outstanding gift from the Deep
C Anand Educational Trust. A recognition of the talent that we have at the school,
but also the opportunity for other boys to experience the many benefits of a Sixth
Form education at Bishop Cotton School. To become a Cottonian is to join a
community of successful, high-achieving and like-minded brothers that stretches
across the world and provides a lifelong support network”.
The closing date for applications for the 2023 scholarships is 12 noon (IST)
Monday 26th June.

What we are looking for?
We are looking to support outstanding young men who can act as role models at
BCS.
The successful recipients should be able to demonstrate an excellent school career
to date including a strong performance in the Class X board examinations (typically
at least 94%)
Candidates who have scored at a slightly lower level (90% or above) but can
demonstrate excellence in a major co-curricular discipline offered at BCS (As an
example state level representation in cricket or football, a grade 7 or above in either

Trinity or ABRSM music or demonstrable success in Debating or Drama) will also be
considered.

Types of scholarship
The scholarship will usually be a non-means-tested scholarship of a fixed amount
and it is expected that it will be continued for two years – Class XI and Class XII
(depending on continued good performance by the successful candidate).
If there is still an issue of affordability then parents can ask for an enhancement of
the award through means-testing.
The final amount of the award is confidential between the Scholarship Committee
and the family concerned. If the amount is divulged to a third party the award will
become null and void.

Selection process
Candidates should email the Director of Bishop Cotton School
(secy@bishopcotton.com) by 12 noon on Monday 26th June
. Their email should
include a current cv/resume that lists all achievements to date together with a letter
(of no more than 500 words) outlining why the candidate should be considered for
the award and what they will offer to the BCS community.

A Scholarship committee (Chaired by the Director together with the Headmaster, the
Bursar and the Dean of Admissions) will consider all applications.
Parents asking for financial help will be means-tested by the Bursary. This will
involve a confidential disclosure of their financial affairs.
Those short-listed will be contacted by the Director for an interview (either in person
or by zoom or a similar online medium). Unsuccessful candidates will be informed
by email – no reason will be given for the decision.

After the interview process, short-listed candidates will be informed as to whether
they have been successful and if they have, the amount of the award. The amount of
the award will be credited to the school account when they return to school in July.
Successful candidates will be known as Deep C Anand Educational Trust Scholars,
but the size of the award will not be divulged to third parties.
