Bishop Cotton School, Shimla (BCS) celebrated the school’s 164th Annual Speech Day (Wednesday 8 Nov 2023) marking the legendary school’s proud history and celebrating the academic and good character prizes with the school’s community.

Impressive Parade

The chief guest was Education Minister, Mr Rohit Thakur, Member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, who unfurled the flag after an impressive parade took place on the first flat with the Prefects leading with the school flags.  The band played the Bishop Cotton School song – which reminded everyone to ‘Overcome Evil with Good’ along with the NCC boys standing smartly to attention.

Speech Day Prizes – Lefroy wins Cock House Shield, first time for 23 years

The Chief Guest handed out prizes to the students from Class III to Class XII, across the school to the claps and rapturous cheers of the school community.  Lefroy House won the coveted ‘Cock House Shield’ for the first time in 23 years.  Lefroy also won both academic cups for Junior and Senior school, as well as the Bayliss Shield (*pictured).  Lefroy was also Mr Rohit Thakur’s house when he was at the school and he was very impressed with the school captain Yatish Bansal showing his leadership skills.

Important message to Cottonians

During his speech Education Minister, Mr Rohit Thakur said he was extremely honoured to be back at his old school where he was a student from KG – to 12th grade, as the batch of 1992. Mr Thakur had a message for all the Cottonians in the room: “While a section of India still remains poor and illiterate, efforts are being made by us and you shall also all bear that responsibility of transforming our great nation from tradition to modernity, to being a diverse, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-lingual, socially responsible young national of tomorrow.”

Bishop Cotton School, Shimla has recently been ranked Number 2 in all India and Number 1 in Himachal Pradesh, as best boys boarding school (Vintage Legacy, Education World ‘23) and ranked No.1 for “Quality in Education” in Himachal Pradesh, in the ICSE Category for The North India’s School Merit Awards survey conducted by (Education Today ‘23). It has also just been accredited this year as a Cambridge International School, starting GCSEs and A’Levels.
