BCS celebrates Sports Day 2022, Shimla

Bishop Cotton School, Shimla (BCS) celebrated their Annual Athletics and Sports Day for 2022 showing off the Cottonians’ skills, strength and fitness. The Sports Captain lit the flame of the BCS Olympic torch starting off the ceremony.

As a traditional heritage school, many of the old routines have been kept alive since its foundation in 1859. The students still get up early for physical training (PT) every day and practice sports like shooting, boxing and swimming as well as marching drills. The boys were led by the Captains of their House for an impressive March Past the Chief Guest Brigadier Bhandari.

One of the highlights of the day was the ‘hoop of fire’ display. Cottonian gymnasts have been in training for months for this daredevil event which involves jumping through a ‘hoop of fire’ and landing in a forward roll. It requires strength, bravery and timing and thankfully all students timed it perfectly.

The chief guest Brigadier Bhandari gave out the prizes and was impressed by the level of fitness in the school saying; “I hope the Cottonians’ keep up their fitness when they leave school – boxing as well as team sports are very important for later in life. These days too many people just go to the gym and do weights, but running, gymnastics, yoga, Zumba and all I’ve seen today builds up health and strength for strong muscles like we require in the army.”

Athletic races were held where boys competed against other Houses in the school. The junior school did a yoga display, there was the traditional PT display and for the first time Zumba dance routine was enjoyed by the whole school community. The grand finale had the boys making the symbol of the Olympic rings and BCS. The overall Sports Cup was won by Curzon House.
