BCS celebrates 163rd Founder’s Day

Bishop Cotton School, Shimla (BCS) celebrated the school’s 163rd Founder’s Day (28 July 2022) in the monsoon mist, which made for a very atmospheric ceremony.

Wreaths were laid at the statue in honour of the school’s founder, Bishop George Edward Cotton. Bishop Cotton founded the school after visiting Shimla and acquiring the land where the current school campus now sits.

The annual T M Whitmarsh Knight Lecture took place after a chapel service which was adorned by the beautiful singing of the school choir.

This year’s lecture was given by Mr Avay Shukla (Ret’d IAS, Environmentalist and Writer) who stressed the importance that young Cottonians will have to invest themselves in the future of India, both politically and environmentally.

The assembled gathering, including many Old Cottonians, then gave a rousing send off to the Class XII mountaineering team as they set off to climb Mount Yunam (6,111m) on the annual BCS expedition.

Bishop Cotton School is an institution rooted in history and tradition. Over decades, its alumni have included some of the most distinguished men in India and elsewhere.
